CPI(M) suspends MP over "lavish lifestyle"
CPI(M) suspended Rajya Sabha member Ritabrata Banerjee from the party for three months for his "lavish lifestyle". Banerjee used to exhibit his possessions on social media, a practice that violated the party's 'austerity' principle. The 38-year old parliamentarian also allegedly tried using his position to have a Democratic Youth Federation of India member fired from his job after he questioned his expensive assets.
Mont Blanc pen, Apple watch land MP in trouble
Banerjee would indulge in "acts of indiscretion" and was accused of "consumerism". In February, he posted a photo of himself sporting an Apple Smart Watch and a Mont Blanc Pen. When a DYFI member asked how he could afford such gadgets, Banerjee wrote to his employer demanding action against him and threatened police action. Sources said he had been warned, but to no avail.
Panel formed to investigate accusations
The decision to suspend him was taken at a state committee meeting in Kolkata. Four-five members reportedly abstained from voting. A panel was formed to probe into the accusations, which will submit a report in two months. Meanwhile, Banerjee would continue his duties as MP.
