PM Modi backs Enforcement Directorate amid opposition's criticism
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed his support for the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in response to opposition parties' allegations of unfair imprisonment. He asserted that an honest person has nothing to fear, but those involved in corruption have "paap ka dar" (fear of sin). Speaking to ANI, PM Modi countered opposition claims stating that the majority of ED cases are not against politicians, but corrupt officials and drug traffickers.
Why does this story matter?
The PM's remarks come at a time when leaders from the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance have criticized the "targeting of opposition leaders" by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party through "misuse of central agencies." They also submitted a letter to the Election Commission of India on March 22, arguing that arrests of individuals holding Constitutional posts are designed to suppress democratic functioning. This complaint followed the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the now-scrapped excise policy case.
PM Modi questions opposition over ED's actions
On Monday, PM Modi challenged the opposition's claims by questioning how many of its leaders are currently in jail. He highlighted that his home minister was imprisoned during his tenure as the chief minister of Gujarat. He also emphasized that only 3% of ED cases involve political figures, while a significant 97% are against non-political entities such as drug traffickers and corrupt officials.
PM highlights ED's achievements
Notably, the Prime Minister praised the ED for its significant role in combating corruption since he took office in 2014. Before his term, the ED had only seized assets worth ₹ 5,000 crores, but under his leadership, assets amounting to ₹1 lakh crores were condiscated. "They've held people and seized cash. I am convinced that the corruption had destroyed the country. We should fight against corruption with our full strength. This is my personal conviction," he said.
Substantial increase in cash recoveries in past decade: PM Modi
During the interview, PM Modi also pointed out a substantial increase in cash recoveries over the last decade. PM said, "In the last ten years, we have recovered ₹ 2200 crore in cash, while ED before 2014, could only recover ₹ 34 lakh cash which can be carried in a school bag. While 70 small trucks (chota haathi) will be needed to keep ₹ 2200 crore. It means that the ED is doing a good job."
