J&K polls: Phase 2 begins, Omar Abdullah among key candidates
The second phase of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections began on Wednesday. The polls are being held after a gap of 10 years and mark the first assembly election since the region's special status and statehood were revoked five years ago. Approximately 26 lakh voters across six districts will determine the fate of 239 candidates contesting for 26 seats.
Key candidates and constituencies in the spotlight
The seats up for grabs in this phase include Kangan, Ganderbal, Hazratbal, Khanyar, Habbakadal, Lal Chowk, Channapora, Zadibal, Eidgah, and Central Shalteng. Other notable constituencies are Budgam and Gulabgarh. Among the high-profile candidates are former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah from Ganderbal and Budgam seats; Jammu and Kashmir BJP chief Ravinder Raina from Nowshera assembly seat; Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee president Tariq Hamid Karra from Central-Shalteng seat.
Security measures and separatist influence in election
Security has been heightened across all regions, particularly those along the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan. Officials anticipate a reduction in cross-border shelling due to the ongoing ceasefire between India and its neighbor. The election is also seen as a litmus test for claims that recent development efforts have restored people's faith in democracy.
Separatist influence and previous election turnout
Of the 26 seats in this round, 15 are located in central Kashmir, a former separatist stronghold. Three districts—Reasi, Rajouri and Poonch—have experienced consecutive terror attacks over the past three years. Separatists also maintain influence around Srinagar where many constituencies are located. The first phase of the election on September 18 saw a high voter turnout of 61.13% across seven districts for 24 constituencies.
Upcoming election phases and foreign delegation visit
The third phase of voting is scheduled for October 1, with vote counting set to take place on October 8. In a bid to highlight J&K's democratic transition, the Indian government has invited a delegation of foreign diplomats to visit the Union Territory. The wealthiest candidate in this phase is J&K Apni party chief Altaf Bukhari, whose wealth exceeds ₹165 crore.
