Sexual misconduct common in Parliament too, says Renuka Chowdhury

    What's the story

Hours after veteran Bollywood choreographer Saroj Khan stirred up a storm by defending casting couch in Indian film industry, Rajya Sabha member Renuka Chowdhury said sexual misconduct is rampant inside the Indian Parliament too, much like all other workplaces.

"Yes, it's the bitter truth. This happens everywhere. Don't imagine that Parliament is immune or any other workspace is immune," she told ANI.

    Details

'It's time for India to stand up and say #MeToo'

Saying her comments might provoke "the film industry to get up in arms" against her, she added, "Top actresses have taken so long to come out and say #MeToo. It's time India also stands up and says #MeToo."

This isn't the first time the outspoken Congress leader has stood for women rights. Among other things, she has batted for Women Reservation Bill's early passage.

    Controversy

Here's what Saroj Khan had said

Meanwhile, Saroj Khan was asked about Telugu actor Sri Reddy's strip-protest against the casting couch culture.

She reportedly said, "Even people in the government do it. Why are you after the film industry? At least the industry provides employment. It's not as if you are raped and abandoned."

"It's upon the girl. If you don't want to be caught, you won't," she added.
