Congress didn't pay Rs. 35/month rent, asked to vacate Allahabad-office
The grand old party, the Congress may be looking to regain its lost lustre in national politics but it stands to lose its iconic office in Allahabad. The reason, you wonder? Congress reportedly didn't pay rent for the apartment and owners have asked the party to either clear dues or vacate it. As it turns out, the rent is just Rs. 35 per month.
Leaders like Indira Gandhi held meetings at this office
The office is located at 34 Jawahar Square of Allahabad and is nearly eight decades old. It was in this office that important meetings took place during the freedom struggle. Leaders like PD Tandon, Kamla Nehru and Indira Gandhi, held gatherings at this office. Obviously, the current office bearers of Congress don't want to vacate it, considering the office's heritage.
But why has the national party not paid rent?
After not paying rent for years, the amount Congress owes is nearly Rs. 5,000. The owner, Raj Kumar Saraswat, has written to Congress to either pay the rent by July end or vacate the 3,000 square feet property. Speaking about the contention, state executive of UPCC, Kishore Varshney said the money couldn't be deposited as there was a dispute about rent with the owner.
To save office, Congress leaders write to Rahul Gandhi
The office bearers have written to President Rahul Gandhi and UPCC chief Raj Babbar to save the office. Kishore Varshney said efforts are also being taken by 250 party members to pool in money and clear the dues. Really? Meanwhile, a social activist said it was ironical that the party who spend crores couldn't pay the meagre amount. One can hardly debate this.
