Biren Singh advocates for Manipur's integrity on last day
What's the story
Nongthombam Biren Singh has resigned as the Chief Minister of Manipur.
In his resignation letter to Governor AK Bhalla, he called upon the central government to maintain the state's territorial integrity and strengthen action against border infiltration and narco-terrorism.
He also emphasized the need for continued action against illegal poppy cultivation and establishing a fool-proof border system with biometric data.
Border concerns
Singh's stance on territorial integrity and border security
Throughout his tenure, Singh presented himself as a guardian of the Meitei community, frequently blaming regional violence on infiltrators from Myanmar.
In his resignation letter, he requested the continuation of projects to protect all Manipuris and opposed the Kuki demand for an autonomous setup.
He also called for a policy to deport illegal immigrants and sought continued action against drugs and narco-terrorism.
Anti-drug efforts
Singh's fight against drugs and praise for security forces
Before resigning, Singh praised security forces for destroying illegal poppy plants in Churachandpur district.
He asked the Centre to continue the strict Free Movement Regime (FMR) with biometric data application and emphasized on speedy border fencing work underway.
This is in line with his earlier position against illegal poppy cultivation, which he has attributed to Myanmar.
