What's the story
Members of Parliament (MPs) will see a 24% hike in their salaries, the Indian government has announced.
The hike, effective from April 1, 2023, was notified in an official gazette by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs.
The base salary of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members has been increased to ₹1.24 lakh per month from ₹1 lakh earlier.
Allowance and pension
Daily allowance and pension revised
The daily allowance of MPs has also been hiked from ₹2,000 to ₹2,500.
The pension of former MPs has been revised from ₹25,000 to ₹31,000 a month. The additional pension for every year of service after five years has been increased from ₹2,000 to ₹2,500.
These revisions were announced during the ongoing budget session of Parliament.
Additional perks
Allowances and benefits for MPs
Besides salary and pension hikes, MPs also get a range of allowances.
They get ₹70,000 as a constituency allowance for the maintenance of their office and expenses related to interacting with voters, ₹60,000 as an office allowance monthly, and ₹2,500 as a daily allowance when Parliament is in session.
They are also given an annual phone/internet usage allowance and 34 domestic flights a year for themselves and their families.

MPs enjoy housing, electricity, and water benefits
MPs also get first-class train travel anytime for personal or professional use. They are entitled to claim a mileage allowance while using the roads.
They are also given 50,000 free units of electricity and 4,000 kiloliters of water per year.
The government also houses them for their five-year term in New Delhi. Those who refuse official accommodation can claim a monthly housing allowance.
