What's the story

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has received the highest approval ratings this week among the thirteen world leaders surveyed by Morning Consult, a US-based global leader approval tracker. At 77%, PM Modi outperformed several foreign leaders including US President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

Context

Why does this story matter?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party BJP gained a large majority in four out of five states in recently concluded assembly elections. Modi's popularity among voters, as well as his efforts to engage with people, are viewed as major reasons for the poll victory. It might also provide insight into the public mood ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Leaders

Other leaders included in the survey

PM Modi garnered an approval rating of 77% in the survey which puts him ahead of all the other 12 leaders. Other leaders include Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez, Italian PM Mario Draghi, Japanese PM Fumio Kishida, US President Joe Biden, Australian PM Scott Morrison, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, UK PM Boris Johnson, and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

Survey

Data is based on a 7-day online survey

The data is based on a seven-day moving average of all adults in a given country, with a margin of error of between (+/-) 1-3%. In the US, the average sample size is around 45,000. In the other countries, the sample size ranges from 3,000-to 5,000. All interviews were conducted online and in India, the sample is representative of the literate population.

Respondents

Respondents were asked about their nations' progress

The respondents were also questioned if they believe things in their nation are heading in the right direction or have veered off course as part of the study. In this week's survey, this figure rose to 75% from 53% in May 2021. In each nation, surveys are weighted by age, gender, area, and, in some cases, education breakdowns based on official government sources.
