Mithun Chakraborty defected to BJP to bail out son: Mamata
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee slammed actor-turned-politician Mithun Chakraborty on Thursday for leaving the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2021. At an election rally in Islampur, North Dinajpur district, Banerjee expressed her disappointment with Chakraborty's decision, stating, "I had made Mithun Chakraborty the Rajya Sabha MP of TMC." "But I never knew he was another big traitor of Bengal. He went to RSS and bowed down just to save his son," she alleged.
Mimoh's wedding canceled after police arrived to investigate rape charges
Banerjee was referring to the scheduled wedding of Chakraborty's son, which was canceled after police arrived at the scene on July 10, 2018. The scheduled marriage of Mimoh Chakraborty was canceled after a woman filed a complaint alleging rape and cheating against the groom. After the arrival of the investigating team, the bride's family also left the place. He got married on July 10, after getting bail.
Banerjee accuses Chakraborty of betrayal
"If you remember his son was booked. Police had gone to the wedding to investigate. He got scared and went straight to the RSS office...and said that he was a BJP sevak. Those who can fight, I consider only them as humans," she added. Chakraborty strongly reacted to Banerjee's comments while campaigning in Darjeeling. "I am Gaddar (traitor). I am Sardar (chief). I am everything. She has lost her mind seeing the crowd swell at the BJP rally," he said.
Banerjee nominated Chakraborty for Rajya Sabha seat
The Banerjee-led TMC fielded Chakraborty as their candidate for the Rajya Sabha election from West Bengal in 2014. However, he resigned from the Rajya Sabha in 2016, citing health reasons. A year prior, Chakraborty was summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for questioning regarding the Saradha Chit Fund scam. After an investigation into this scandal, Chakraborty returned ₹1.19 crore to the ED.
