Parrikar had earlier been to the US for treatment
After Parrikar was diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer, the Goa CM flew to the US to undergo treatment. He had returned from the US on September 6, but was unable to attend office as he was recuperating at home. Meanwhile, with Parrikar's health deteriorating, the Congress mounted pressure on the BJP government, and demanded that President's rule be imposed on Goa.
Parrikar's deteriorating health prompted BJP to look for alternatives
Parrikar had earlier apprised BJP chief Amit Shah about his health condition, but had been urged to continue as Goa's Chief Minister. Then, on September 15, Parrikar's health deteriorated, and the Goa CM had to be airlifted to the premier All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi for treatment. Consequently, the BJP had considered looking for alternatives.
