NCP(SP) leader demands immunity for women to commit murder
What's the story
Rohini Khadse, President of the women's wing of the Nationalist Congress Party (SP), has made a rather controversial appeal to President Droupadi Murmu.
In her letter, she sought immunity for women to commit one murder.
The demand comes in the wake of rising violence against women in India, including a recent case where a 12-year-old girl was gang-raped in Mumbai.
Safety issues
Khadse's letter highlights India's safety concerns for women
Khadse's letter to President Murmu was written on International Women's Day. She spoke about the oppressive mentality and rapist mindset existing in society.
She also pointed out the ineffective law enforcement system that fails to ensure the protection of women.
Her demand for immunity was directed toward addressing these concerns and eliminating the mindset that enables atrocities against women in India.
Global concern
India's ranking as unsafe country for women
Khadse quoted a World Population Review survey that placed India as the most unsafe country for women in Asia.
The survey pointed out problems like kidnappings, disappearances, domestic violence, and other grave issues.
"In light of this, we, on behalf of all women, make a request—grant us permission for one murder," Khadse wrote.
Historical parallels
Khadse draws inspiration from historical female warriors
In her letter, Khadse compared her demand to the actions of historical female warriors like Maharani Tarabai and Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar, saying they had taken up swords to defend their kingdoms from danger.
"So why should we, in our fight for social reform, remain silent?" she asked rhetorically in her letter to President Murmu.
