'Mission is...Viksit Kerala': Rajeev Chandrasekhar after becoming Kerala BJP chief
What's the story
Rajeev Chandrasekhar, a veteran politician and former Union Minister, has been appointed as the new president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s Kerala unit.
The announcement was made by BJP central observer Prahlad Joshi at a state council meeting on Monday.
He takes over from K. Surendran, who has been in the role since 2020.
Transition
Chandrasekhar's appointment marks a significant shift in state leadership
After he was appointed, Chandrasekhar said the party has to bring change to Kerala.
"We also know that to bring effective change to the lives of the people of Kerala, to the economy...to bring investments...we have to be in government, and therefore, our goal is that we will make a very strong effort to provide an alternative to the state that the two fronts have ravaged over the last 70 years."
"We want Kerala to be 'Viksit Kerala'."
Endorsement
Surendran praises Chandrasekhar's experience and expertise
Outgoing president Surendran praised Chandrasekhar's vast experience and know-how in different sectors.
He said his attributes would greatly help in expanding the BJP in Kerala.
"The leader's experience and expertise in various sectors would accelerate the growth of the BJP in the state."
Despite some criticism surrounding Chandrasekhar's non-conventional political background, Surendran stood by him, saying, "he could shine in his new role."
Career
Chandrasekhar's political journey and future challenges
Chandrasekhar, 60, has served as the Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Jal Shakti.
He will face electoral challenges in Kerala in the local body elections in October this year and Assembly elections next year in April-May.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor responded to the announcement on X, posting, "Congratulations and best wishes to the newly elected Kerala State President of the BJP, @RajeevRC_X. Looking forward to crossing swords again!"
