Among 10 super-rich candidates, 5 won; richest one lost deposit
Apparently, money didn't play a role in Lok Sabha polls this time, as several rich candidates had to bite the dust, revealed data of Election Commission. Out of the top ten super-rich candidates, only five won. In fact, the richest candidate, who contested from Bihar's Patliputra, lost his deposit. One of the biggest losers was Congress' Jyotiraditya Scindia who lost his bastion Guna.
Richest candidate had assets worth Rs. 1,107 crore
Out of the 10 richest candidates, three belonged to Andhra Pradesh. Two each were from Bihar and Madhya Pradesh, whereas one each were residents of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Telangana. Ramesh Kumar Sharma, who contested from Patliputra, was the richest candidate. Sharma had declared assets worth Rs. 1,107 crore and he got only 1,556 votes. The seat was won by BJP's Ram Kripal Yadav.
Second richest had assets worth Rs. 895 crore, lost
The second richest candidate was Konda Vishweshwar Reddy, the son-in-law of Apollo chairman C Pratap Reddy. He had declared assets worth Rs. 895 crore. He fought on a Congress ticket from Chevella Lok Sabha constituency in Telangana and lost to TRS' candidate G Ranjith Reddy. The third richest candidate, Congress' Nakkul Mehta, declared assets worth Rs. 660 crore. He won from MP's Chhindwara constituency.
Scindia was the country's fifth-richest candidate, he lost his turf
With an asset of Rs. 374 crore, Scindia was the fifth richest candidate. The Congress leader, who was also given the responsibility of UP West, lost his citadel to BJP's Dr. Krishnapal Yadav. The sixth richest candidate, Prasad Veera Potluri, declared assets worth Rs. 347 crore. He contested on a YSRCP ticket from Vijayawada parliamentary seat and lost. TDP's Kerineni Srinivas won from there.
Congress' DK Suresh won from Bengaluru rural
The fourth richest candidate was Congress' Vasanthakumar H with a net worth Rs. 417 crore. He defeated BJP's Pon RadhaKrishnan. The eighth richest candidate, Congress' DK Suresh, won from Bengaluru rural by a margin of 2,06,870 votes. The ninth richest contestant Kanumuru Raghurama Krishna Raja won by a margin of 31,909 votes. He had declared assets Rs. 325 crore.
TDP's Jayadev Galla had a close shave
Jayadev Galla, who declared assets worth Rs. 305 crore, won from Guntur parliamentary constituency. He had a close shave as he won by a margin of just 4,205 votes.
