After fodder scam sentencing, Lalu Prasad's only sister dies
It seems RJD has indeed fallen on hard times. After RJD chief Lalu Yadav's sentencing in the fodder scam, his only sister Gangotri Devi has died, apparently of "shock." On Saturday, a Ranchi-based special court sentenced Lalu to 3.5 years in prison. After hearing of her death, Lalu's wife Rabri and sons Tej Pratap and Tejaswi rushed to Gangotriji's place. Here are the details.
What was the fodder scam?
The fodder scam relates to 64 cases, wherein Rs. 950cr were systematically embezzled by bureaucrats/politicians in the name of purchasing livestock feed. In December, CBI special court convicted the former CM with 15 others. Since then, Lalu is lodged in Ranchi's Birsa Munda Central Jail.
How did Gangotri Devi expire?
The septuagenarian Gangotri Devi resided in the peon's quarter of Patna's Veterinary College with her son Rudal. Lalu also lived there before he became the CM in 1990. Rabri said Gangotriji had prayed for Lalu's release. However, after learning that her brother was "sentenced to jail for a long period," she was "devastated." She lost her husband in 2010 and eldest son in 2016.
What has Lalu been up to in prison?
Meanwhile, in prison, Lalu has been assigned gardener's duties. As per the manual, he would get Rs. 93/day. In the next two days, he will probably be shifted to the Hazaribagh open jail. Lalu was informed of his sister's death. However, no parole has been sought for him to attend the funeral. His lawyer is applying for a regular bail at Jharkhand High court.
