How the Kumaraswamy's govt. is likely to be set up
Following Yeddyurappa's resignation as Karnataka's chief minister, JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy is set to take his oath as the new chief minister on May 23. Owing to the post-poll alliance between his party and the Congress, Kumaraswamy now faces an extremely delicate balancing act wherein some key posts in the government would be demanded by Congress. Here's more.
Kumaraswamy likely to keep finance ministry, Congress leader as deputy-CM
According to people familiar with the developments, Congress leader Parameshwara is slated to be the new deputy chief minister, while Kumaraswamy is expected to keep the finance portfolio for himself. There will be no rotational chief minister arrangement with Congress, Kumaraswamy confirmed. Meanwhile, most of the portfolios in the Kumaraswamy government has been decided, although the list could be subject to last minute changes.
JD(S) to keep key portfolios in core, social sectors
It is likely that key portfolios in the legal, social, and core sectors would be allotted to the JD(S) leaders. In core sectors, they will get agriculture and industry portfolios; and social welfare, labor, and education in the social sector. JD(S) may also retained law and parliamentary affairs, cooperatives, and textiles and endowments for their leaders.
These portfolios to be allotted to Congress leaders
In the social sector, Congress leaders are expected to get health, higher education, and food and civil supplies portfolios. Animal husbandry, and forests have reportedly been left for Congress leaders along with excise, revenue, transport, science and technology, information and publicity, and sports portfolios. Congress leaders may also be appointed as the Bengaluru development minister, and the small industries and sugar minister.
