Kolkata rape-murder: Huge row after 42 doctors transferred amid protests
The West Bengal government has transferred 42 professors and doctors working in various medical institutions and hospitals amid ongoing protests over the rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor. Among the 42 relocated doctors are Dr. Sangeeta Paul and Dr. Supriya Das, who worked at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the trainee doctor's semi-naked body was found on August 9.
Transferred doctors include those from crime scene hospital
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has slammed the Mamata Banerjee government over this decision, calling it a "desperate attempt to scare the senior doctor community into submission." Amit Malviya, head of the BJP IT Cell, has accused Banerjee of specifically targeting Medical College Kolkata and Calcutta National Medical College. He asserted that these institutions are the epicenters of protests against her "fascist regime."
Malviya questions Banerjee's motives behind doctor transfers
Malviya questioned Banerjee's motives behind these transfers, particularly as they involve senior doctors from key protest centers. He disclosed that five professors from these two prestigious institutes have been relocated to colleges in Siliguri, Tamluk, Jhargram etc. "This is a desperate attempt to scare the senior doctor community into submission. What is Mamata Banerjee trying to hide?" he asked.
Banerjee is behaving like a real dictator: BJP Poonawalla
BJP's national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla also attacked the Banerjee government, saying that "it is busy cracking down on those crusading for justice." "Mamata Banerjee is behaving like a real dictator. Indira Gandhi or Kim Jong or Stalin would be proud of," he said. Poonawalla also hinted that TMC was behind the recent vandalism at RG Kar Hospital, stating, "5000 goons sent to disrupt a peaceful march and ransack a crime scene and destroy evidence at RG Kar Hospital."
CBI detains former principal for questioning in rape-murder case
In related news, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has detained Dr. Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, for questioning in the rape and murder case. The victim's parents informed the CBI that they suspect several interns and physicians from the hospital may be involved in their daughter's murder. They have provided names of potential suspects to the central agency, which is investigating under a Calcutta High Court order.
