Kim Jong-un: News

Kim Jong-un is the scion of North Korea's ruling Kim dynasty and is the third Supreme Leader of the country. He is the son of the second Supreme Leader, Kim Jong-il (1994-2011), and the grandson of the founder and first Supreme Leader of North Korea, Kim Il-sung (1948-1994). Jong-un is the General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and a member of the Presidium of the party's Politburo. He is believed to have attended school in Switzerland under a false identity. He did his higher education at Kim Il-sung University in Pyongyang. In 2010, Kim was appointed as the Vice-Chairman of the Central Military Commission, and after his father died, he took over as the Supreme Leader in 2011. He subsequently became the Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army, Chairman of the Central Military Commission, and the Chairman of the National Defence Commission. His zeal to expand North Korea's nuclear program resulted in a heated exchange of threats and rhetoric with the then US President Donald Trump, which culminated in the historic face-to-face negotiations between the two. Jong-un is blamed for the complete lack of transparency in the North Korean regime's way of functioning and its record of grave human rights violations.
