For Karunanidhi's recovery, don't follow superstitions, DMK-cadres told
Dravida Kazhagam (DMK) leader K. Veeramani, on Monday, asked the cadres to not follow superstitions and stated the patriarch M Karunanidhi will get better with medicines only. A DMK supporter tonsured head for Karunanidhi's health
One supporter of Karunanidhi tonsured his head for the leader. This practice is followed in some Hindu temples. Seprately, students at a Tiruvarur school, where Karunanidhi studied, held a prayer meeting for his well-being. Outside Kauvery Hospital many others prayed for Karunanidhi holding his photograph in their hands. Many slept on roads, others didn't eat for days, all for their beloved Kalaignar.
Notably, Karunanidhi himself is an atheist
Social reformer E.V. Ramasamy or Periyar founded the Dravidar Kazhagam, whose split formed the DMK. Karunanidhi, and his predecessor Annadurai, both are atheists. Once Karunanidhi objected to a cadre walking on fire, and on another occasion, he had expressed displeasure at a member applying tilak. However, he also maintained he understood not everyone in DMK was committed to the ideology.
