Karnataka: Congress-JD(S) alliance already in trouble? Portfolio-allocation leaves MLAs upset
Congress President Rahul Gandhi met MLAs led by MB Patil in New Delhi on Saturday, after portfolio allocation in Karnataka raised questions about the newly-formed alliance. Reportedly, Patil alleged he had become a victim of the fight between Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara and former CM Siddaramaiah. Amidst the crisis, BJP's BS Yeddyurappa claimed many JD(S) and Congress MLAs wanted to join the saffron-party.
MB Patil reportedly wanted Deputy CM post, Rahul Gandhi refused
In the Congress-JD(S) alliance, the former got six berths. Reportedly, Patil was eyeing the Deputy Chief Minister post and had met Gandhi for it, but had to return empty-handed. The high command urged MLAs not to create a disturbance, and said that senior ministers will make a decision about berth allotment. Rahul Gandhi reportedly asked Patil to wait for a final decision.
However, Patil says he didn't put any demands forward
"What demands? I have not put forth any demand. I have only explained what's happening in Karnataka. It's for the party high command to take a call," he told reporters, and added he wasn't leading a team of "disgruntled" MLAs.
Meanwhile, JD(S) ministers are unhappy too
As dissent within Congress continued, CM HD Kumaraswamy also had to ask his JD(S) MLAs to stop complaining. Some, including Minor Irrigation Minister CS Puttaraju and Higher Education Minister GT Deve Gowda, were apparently displeased with their positions. The CM reminded them that these portfolios will benefit people. G Parameshwara, meanwhile, said the confusion regarding the open revolt would be cleared soon.
Amidst crisis, BS Yeddyurappa grabs his chance
As Congress and JD(S) tried to reach a consensus with their MLAs, BJP has decided to go for a 'wait and watch' policy. However, Yeddyurappa said, "It is our responsibility to induct those who are disgruntled with the JD(S) and Congress and their style of administration in every assembly segment, and are willing to join the BJP, thereby strengthening the party in every constituency."
