Karnataka Assembly to boost attendance using recliners for 'quick naps'
What's the story
In a bid to enhance post-lunch attendance in the Karnataka Assembly, Speaker UT Khadar has devised an innovative plan.
He intends to hire 15 recliners for MLAs and MLCs so they can take a "quick nap" in the assembly lobby.
The move comes amid legislators often leaving the Vidhana Soudha after lunch and not returning, leading to low attendance.

Recliners to be installed in assembly lobby
Khadar justified his proposal by saying, "To prevent this, I have decided to hire at least 15 recliners and install them in the assembly lobby."
However, he was clear about not purchasing the recliners, as it would be wasteful if they remained unused after the session.
These recliners will be removed once the session ends.
Additional initiatives
Free meals and book events to improve attendance
The speaker also mentioned other initiatives to improve attendance, like offering free breakfast and lunch for MLAs and MLCs at the legislature.
He said these steps have already improved attendance.
"They arrive late if they wait for breakfast, or it takes them time to return for the session if they leave Vidhana Soudha for lunch. Now, there are no such issues," he said.

Upcoming events at Vidhana Soudha
Apart from the recliner initiative and free meals, the assembly secretariat is also hosting a book event from February 28 to March 3 at Vidhana Soudha.
The event will include book releases and panel discussions, further encouraging legislators' presence.
The Karnataka Assembly Budget Session will begin on March 3 with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah presenting the state budget on March 7.
