'Human waste in food...': Adityanath issues guidelines for UP eateries
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday instructed that the names and addresses of operators, proprietors, and managers must be prominently displayed at all food establishments. This directive follows reports of food contamination, including spitting and urine-mixing incidents. According to a PTI report, Adityanath also mandated that chefs and waiters wear masks and gloves, and that CCTV cameras be installed in hotels and restaurants for enhanced monitoring.
Adityanath calls for thorough investigation of food establishments
During a high-level meeting in Lucknow, Adityanath called for strict action against those found adulterating food items with human waste. He stated, "Dhabas, restaurants and food establishments should be thoroughly investigated and police verification of every employee should be done." The CM also suggested necessary amendments to the Food Safety and Standards Act to ensure the purity and sanctity of food items.
Recent incidents of food adulteration spark concern
The new guidelines were prompted by several disturbing incidents of food adulteration in Uttar Pradesh. On September 12, a video went viral showing a teenager spitting on rotis while preparing them at an eatery in Saharanpur. Similarly, last week, a juice vendor in Ghaziabad was arrested for allegedly serving fruit juices mixed with urine to customers. In June, two men were arrested by police in Noida for allegedly selling juice contaminated with their spit.
Adityanath highlights adverse health effects of food adulteration
Adityanath emphasized the grave health risks posed by such incidents, stating that they are "gruesome and have an adverse effect on the health of the common man." He asserted that such practices cannot be accepted at all. The CM called for concrete arrangements to prevent such incidents in Uttar Pradesh and proposed a state-wide intensive campaign for employee verification at food establishments.
