Parliament passes two bills for repealing or amending 200 laws
PM Narendra Modi's lean governance model is finally percolating into legislation as well. After showing results with a compact cabinet, he is now moving towards getting rid of obsolete laws and amending other laws to make them relevant. Thus, Parliament passed the Repealing and Amending Bill, 2017 and the Repealing and Amending (Second) Bill, 2017 seeking to repeal or amend over 200 laws.
What are these bills?
These bills were passed in RS by voice-vote. They were already passed by LS. The Repealing and Amending Bill repeals 104 acts, amends one and makes minor amendments to three others. The Repealing and Amending (Second) Bill repeals 131 acts. Of these 38 are amending acts; they are duplicates as these changes have already been made in the main acts.
How many laws will be repealed or amended?
During the bill's discussion, MoS Law and Justice PP Chaudhry said about 1,824 laws have been identified by the committee set up to identify obsolete laws. He said, "After the passage of these Bills, a total of 1657 laws will be either repealed or amended."
