Hardeep Singh Puri: News

Hardeep Singh Puri is a diplomat who has upheld India’s interests in various international forums such as the United Nations, Brazil, UK, Uruguay Round of UNDP/UNCTAD trade negotiations, etc. He completed a natural arc when he joined national politics in 2014 and later became a minister. Born on February 15, 1952, in Delhi, Puri completed his graduation and post-graduation in History from Hindu College, University of Delhi. He was a 1974-batch IFS officer. From 1994-1997, he served as a Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs. He was India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations during 2009-2013 and served as the President of the Security Council from August 2011 to November 2012. After retirement, he joined the International Peace Institute in 2013. It was BJP’s national security policy that attracted him to the party in 2014. In 2018, he became a member of the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh. In the second Narendra Modi government, he was appointed as the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Housing and Urban Affairs and Civil Aviation and Minister of State for Commerce and Industry (2019-2021). During a cabinet overhaul in 2021, he was appointed as the Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs.
