Hansraj Gangaram Ahir is known for his involvement in unearthing the coal scam that later became one of the focal points of the 2014 general elections. An exemplary parliamentarian, Ahir has been at the forefront of various issues faced by farmers. Born on November 11, 1954, in Nanded, he studied till 10th grade. Despite not obtaining higher education, he has always been a staunch believer in using science and technology for the betterment of society. He represented BJP in Maharashtra Legislative Council from 1994-1996. In 1996, he was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time from Chandrapur. He won three consecutive general elections from Chandrapur (2004, 2009, and 2014) before suffering defeat to Suresh Narayan Dhanorkar of INC in 2019. During his time in the parliament, he often stood with his oratory and private bills. He received the Sansad Ratna Award in 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014. He has also been part of various committees such as the Standing Committee on Coal and Steel, Committee on Privileges, Committee on Public Undertakings, etc. After being repeatedly turned down by the PMO when he tried to obtain details of coal mining, he approached the CVC. The CBI inquiry that ensued unearthed a scam that played a huge part in unseating the UPA government in 2014.
