Hariharan Raja is a chartered accountant and a politician from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from Tamil Nadu. He did his graduation in Commerce from Madurai Kamaraj University. He was a volunteer of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), holding some key positions such as Mukhyashikshak and Rameshwaram division’s Vibhag Vyavastha Pramukh. He later joined BJP in 1980. Raja contested for the first time in the 1989 Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections and, in 1991, became the District Convener of the Sivaganga district. He won from the Karaikudi constituency in the 2001 Tamil Nadu Assembly polls, serving as a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) for one term till 2006. Since then, Raja has lost the Assembly elections consecutively in 2006, 2016, and 2021. He unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha elections in 1999, 2014, and 2019. Raja lost in the 2019 General Elections from Sivaganga constituency against the Indian National Congress’s (INC) Karti Chidambaram, the son of senior Congress leader P Chidambaram. Raja has served as Tamil Nadu BJP’s State General Secretary and was appointed as the National Secretary of BJP from 2014 to 2020. He has often been in the news for his controversial remarks.
