Ghazipur landfill fire ignites political tensions in Delhi
A massive fire at the Ghazipur landfill in Delhi has sparked a political row between the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Virendraa Sachdeva, Delhi BJP chief, criticized the AAP government led by Arvind Kejriwal for alleged corruption. He claimed that residents of nearby areas like Mayur Vihar and Kondli are living in unbearable conditions due to the landfill's mismanagement.
BJP chief accuses AAP of failing to manage landfill
Sachdeva accused the AAP of failing to fulfill their promise of clearing the landfill by December 2023. He demanded an inquiry into the fire's origins, suggesting potential corruption. Sachdeva also alleged that only half of the 25 machines intended for use at the site were operational and questioned if Kejriwal would accept responsibility for this failure. The Delhi Fire Service confirmed a significant fire at the landfill on Sunday evening due to "gases produced in the massive mountain of waste."
AAP defends actions, local residents report health issues
In response to the BJP's allegations, AAP MP Sanjay Singh labeled the BJP as a "corrupt party." He assured that all Municipal Corporation of Delhi officials and Fire Department personnel were working diligently to control the fire. Meanwhile, residents near the landfill reported health problems such as throat irritation and breathing difficulties due to smoke from the fire. One resident described issues with breathing and speaking due to pollution, while another resident complained about eye discomfort.
Opposition leader criticizes AAP's management of landfill
Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh, Leader of Opposition in Delhi MCD, also criticized AAP's handling of the landfill. He claimed that people were suffering due to smoke from the fire and alleged that during BJP's tenure, all 25 machines at the site were functional. The Ghazipur landfill, which had grown to a staggering 65 meters by 2019, has long been a source of concern. In 2017, a section of the landfill's garbage collapsed onto a nearby road, causing two deaths.
