Dhinakaran floats party named after Jayalalithaa; smiling Amma on party-flag
What's the story
Rebel AIADMK leader TTV Dhinakaran on Thursday introduced a new party, the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK), named after the late TN CM J Jayalalithaa.
Dhinakaran said the new outfit would capture power in the state.
He also unveiled the party's flag, featuring the image of a smiling Jayalalithaa in middle.
The flag is black on top and red below with white in middle.
The legal battle
Dhinakaran approached Delhi High Court in the matter
In his brief address during the party launch, Dhinakaran recalled the difficulties faced by party workers in carrying forward their organizational work without a name.
The party approached Delhi High Court in the matter, which directed the Election Commission to allot the "pressure cooker" symbol to them.
Dhinakaran won from the symbol in the RK Nagar bypoll last December with a huge majority.
Organization
Party mouthpiece refers to new outfit as 'organization' instead 'party'
AMMK mouthpiece Dr. Namadhu MGR refrained from using the word "party" and instead used "organization" to refer to the new outfit.
An organization name, flag, and symbol were needed till the AIADMK and the "two-leaves" symbol nurtured by "Amma" was retrieved, Dhinakaran said.
Former Ministers V Senthil Balaji and P Palaniappan, senior leaders, and disqualified MLAs were among those who attended the event.
