Delhi CM presents ₹1 lakh crore budget; ₹5,100cr for women
What's the story
Delhi CM Rekha Gupta has tabled a historic ₹1 lakh crore budget for the fiscal year 2025-26.
This is the first budget from a Bharatiya Janata Party-led government in Delhi in over 26 years.
The fresh budget is a 31.5% increase from last year's allocation by the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government.
Gupta called it a transformative plan for Delhi, with emphasis on infrastructure, women, electricity, roads and water.
Transformation plan
A budget to transform Delhi into a 'Viksit' city
"Delhi and the whole country are watching this," she said.
"They all have great hopes from the new government. The Budget is not just an account or a ledger; this is the Budget of transformation from a bad economy to Viksit Delhi."
"This Budget is historic," CM Gupta said.
Infrastructure focus
Infrastructure development takes center stage
A major part of the budget has been dedicated to infrastructure development - ₹28,000 crore has been allocated for it.
Gupta slammed the previous AAP government for leaving projects incomplete but assured a future filled with smart expressways and congestion-free corridors.
Another ₹1,000 crore has been earmarked in partnership with the Ministry of Road Transport for better connectivity within NCR regions.
Environmental focus
Water supply and Yamuna cleaning initiatives
To strengthen water supply and end tanker-related corruption, the Delhi Jal Board has been allocated ₹9,000 crore. All water tankers will be fitted with GPS systems for monitoring.
Another ₹500 crore has been set aside for cleaning the Yamuna: 40 decentralized sewage treatment plants will be constructed.
Other key allocations include ₹250 crore for repairing old sewer lines and ₹50 crore for rainwater harvesting initiatives.
Social initiatives
Healthcare and women's welfare in focus
Gupta has also set aside ₹1,000 crore for the upgradation of 24 unfinished or badly-maintained hospitals.
"To address this, ₹1,000 crore has been allocated for upgrading 24 unfinished or poorly maintained hospitals," she announced.
Further, 400 new Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (primary healthcare centers) will be set up at the cost of ₹320 crore.
The Delhi government also set aside ₹5,100 crore for 'Mahila Samridhi Yojana,' which will pay ₹2,500 per month to women in Delhi.
Economic development
Industry, trade, and education initiatives
Gupta also announced a Traders' Welfare Board and plans to check industrial migration out of Delhi by developing new industrial zones.
A Global Investment Summit will also be held in Delhi for the first time to attract international investors.
CM SHRI Schools will also be launched with ₹100 crore for the initiative, apart from an additional ₹750 crore allocated for free laptops to 1,200 students passing class 10th.
