BJP MP from Himachal Pradesh found dead at Delhi home
Ram Swaroop Sharma, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Himachal Pradesh, was found dead inside his residence in Delhi. Police said he died by alleged suicide and his body has been sent for post-mortem. Following the news of his unfortunate demise, BJP canceled its parliamentary party meeting, which was scheduled for today. He is survived by his wife and three sons.
Staff member alerted police after Sharma didn't open door
A staff member of the parliamentarian told Delhi Police that the door of Sharma's room was locked from inside this morning, reports Aaj Tak. When he failed to enter, the staff member alerted the police. After arriving, the cops broke into the room and found Sharma dead. "He was found hanging and the door was closed from inside," Delhi Police told ANI.
Sharma was an RSS member and a two-time MP
Sharma was born on June 10, 1958, in Jalpehar village in the Mandi district of the Himalayan state. He is said to be an active member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ideological parent of BJP. He was elected from the Mandi district for the first time in 2014 and again in 2019. Sharma had served on the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs.
Reportedly, he was suffering from depression
A report in The Tribune claimed that Sharma was battling depression and was undergoing treatment for the past six months. He was alone at his home as his wife had earlier embarked on the Char Dhaam pilgrimage. The MP's personal security officer was in his home district Mandi at the time. MoS (Finance) Anurag Thakur reached Sharma's residence after his mortal remains were brought there.
