Congress leader congratulates Team India after 'fat shaming' Rohit Sharma
What's the story
Congress national spokesperson Shama Mohamed on Tuesday congratulated the Indian men's cricket team for defeating Australia in the semi-final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
She also praised Virat Kohli's stellar contribution of 84 runs in the match.
"Congratulations to team India for their spectacular victory against Australia in the semifinals of the Champions Trophy 2025," she wrote on social media.
Record achievement
Mohamed praises Kohli's record-breaking performance
"A big shout out to @imVkohli for scoring 84 and to be the first player to score 1000 runs in ICC knock out tournaments!" she added.
Kohli's innings led India to a four-wicket win while chasing a target of 265 runs.
The win came under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, whom Mohamed had called "fat for a sportsman" and said his leadership was the "most unimpressive captaincy India has ever had."
Past controversy
Mohamed's past criticism of Sharma resurfaces
The now-deleted post sparked a controversy, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) denouncing her comments as body-shaming.
Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya termed her remarks "outright pathetic."
The Congress party also distanced itself from Mohamed's comments, stressing respect for sporting icons.
The Indian team will now face either South Africa or New Zealand in the final.
