Congress: Anyone can fight Rahul for Congress' president post
As Congress faces criticism over dynastic politics and for not allowing other people to stake claim to Congress' president post, its chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said that leaders wishing to challenge Rahul Gandhi for the post are welcome to file nominations. He said the party was "democratic" even though Rahul remained the popular choice. What else did he say? Read on to know more.
Congress lists precedents when the top post was contested
Surjewala said the party had a "robust internal democracy" and "has never shied away from a democratic challenge." He cited the contests between Mahatma Gandhi and Subhash Chandra Bose; Jitendra Prasada and Sonia Gandhi. He asserted that "Indira Gandhi also successfully fought that challenge."
However, Congress claims that Rahul remains the top choice
Surjewala was quick to point out that Rahul remains "the unquestioned choice of every Congress leader for being president." He claimed that Rahul is "democratic enough," and "party is resilient enough," to welcome anybody to contest any post in the party, including the president's post.
When will Rahul be promoted to the President's post?
The Congress has hinted that Rahul may take over the party's reins by month-end and current president Sonia Gandhi would be a guide under a new mechanism that will be unveiled by the Congress. The party is currently in the midst of conducting organizational polls. Congress leaders like Sachin Pilot and Jyotiraditya Scindia had earlier asserted that Rahul should "lead from the front."
Meanwhile, anticipating the elevation, Rahul has become more proactive
In the past few weeks, Rahul has become more proactive. He has increased his attacks on PM Modi and has been spending time campaigning in the poll-bound states of Gujarat and Himachal. His crisp Twitter posts have also resulted in one million new followers.
