Congress President Rahul Gandhi lashed out at BJP yesterday, claiming what is happening against women during PM Narendra Modi's tenure hasn't happened in the last 3,000 years in India. The "beti bachao, beti padhao" campaign was actually for "saving our daughters from BJP MLAs," he said. While the RSS was a "male chauvinist organization," the Congress would assure 50% women in the party, he added.
'The PM speaks on everything except atrocities on women'
"The PM speaks on everything— bullet train, aeroplanes, toilets. (But) whenever there are atrocities on women, he keeps mum." There are rapes happening in UP, Bihar, Jharkhand and elsewhere, even "their MLA is accused of rape" (Unnao), but Modi didn't speak, he added. Women all over are scared but Modi doesn't have an answer as to why women are unsafe in India.
'In RSS, women's place is at the back,men's in front'
Women didn't have any place in the RSS, Gandhi said. "Their place is at the back and men's place is in front." The day a woman enters RSS, it won't remain RSS, he added. BJP didn't even want to pass the Women's Reservation Bill, he told attendees at the Mahila Adhikar Sammelan organized by the Mahila Congress at Talkatora Stadium in Delhi.
'Congress will have 50% women'
If the Congress wins, it will extend full support to the reservation bill, Gandhi promised. The party will have 50% women, who will take charge of framing policy and strengthening the organization. "We are going to create space for you in the Congress party. We need to create a space at every level." "This is the biggest difference between us and them," he said.
'Your fight is our fight'
Gandhi added the Congress would decide electoral candidates from among men and women based on capabilities. "If both are equally capable, I will choose the woman as a candidate because we need to create a special space for women in our party." On the occasion, Gandhi unveiled a new logo and flag for the Mahila Congress, which so far didn't have any.

Meanwhile, BJP leaders hit back, claiming their party has the highest number of women MPs and MLAs. "India's Defense Minister is a lady, External Affairs Minister is a lady and Lok Sabha Speaker is a lady," said Union Minister Smriti Irani. "To disrespect women just because they are associated with BJP or RSS shows the level to which Rahul Gandhi will fall."
