Congress, NCP appoint LGBTQ+ activists to key party positions
The Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) have taken significant steps toward promoting LGBTQ+ rights in Indian politics. The Congress has established a new internal group dedicated to LGBTQ+ rights, with activist Mario da Penha leading the new unit for the community under its All India Professionals Congress division. Separately, the NCP has named Anish Gawande, another prominent figure from the community, as its spokesperson.
Congress, NCP's move toward greater social inclusivity
The Congress's decision to establish a new unit for the LGBTQ+ community comes after its promising performance in the April-June general election. The party had pledged to introduce legislation legalizing civil unions between same-sex couples. Da Penha, head of this new unit, stated that it is the "only representative framework for queer people within any recognized national political party in India."
First LGBTQ+ spokesperson for opposition party
Gawande, who made history last month as the first person from the LGBTQ+ community to become a spokesperson for the opposition NCP, described da Penha's appointment as "a major moment for queer inclusion in Indian politics." Reflecting on his own journey, Gawande expressed disbelief at how far Indian politics has come in terms of LGBTQ+ representation.
LGBTQ+ rights in India
The Supreme Court decriminalized homosexuality in 2018 but refused to legalize same-sex marriage last year. The court deferred this decision to the parliament, stating that it is the appropriate platform for such a ruling. The government has also echoed this stance, inviting public input on how to ensure inclusive and effective policies for the community.
