BS Yediyurappa: News

BS Yediyurappa, born on February 27, 1943, is a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) politician and a four-time Chief Minister of Karnataka. He was an early associate of the Sangh Parivar and rose from being a clerk to becoming a Municipal Councillor and then an MLA in the Karnataka Assembly during 1983-99 from Shikaripura. He served as an MLA from the same constituency during 2004-14 and was re-elected in 2018. Yediyurappa became Karnataka's Chief Minister for brief periods in 2007 and from 2008-2011. In 2011, he had to resign amid mounting charges of alleged corruption in various scams and was arrested. By 2015, the Karnataka High Court quashed all cases and FIRs against him, absolving him of all the charges. He was a Lok Sabha MP during 2014-18. He became CM for two days after the 2018 Assembly elections but couldn't prove the majority and hence had to resign once again. After multiple defections from the then ruling Congress-JDS alliance to BJP, the state government fell, and in the 2019 bypolls, the defectors emerged victorious on their new party's tickets. BJP thus crossed the majority mark and formed the government, with Yediyurappa taking oath as CM for the fourth time in 2019. However, pressures from within led Yediyurappa to resign again in 2021, with Basavaraj Bommai succeeding him as the Chief Minister.
