Rajeev Chandrasekhar sends legal notice to Shashi Tharoor for defamation
Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) representative for Thiruvananthapuram, has issued a legal notice to Congress leader, Shashi Tharoor, accusing the latter of defamation. It alleges that he spread false information among the constituents of Thiruvananthapuram. The misinformation reportedly includes claims that Chandrasekhar bribed key voters and influential figures, such as parish priests, to win the upcoming polls.
Why does this story matter?
The notice was issued over claims Tharoor made on 24 News that Chandrasekhar sent money to influential voters in the constituency, including parish priests and other religious and community leaders. This act allegedly violated the Model Code of Conduct, which states that political candidates must limit their criticisms to "their policies and programs, past record, and work." The MCC also states that political leaders should also avoid criticizing other parties or their workers based on "unverified allegations or distortion."
Chandrasekhar demands retraction and public apology
In the notice, Chandrasekhar expressed his dismay at the allegations made by Tharoor and demanded a retraction of these statements. "Not only are the said statements totally and completely false but it is clear that the same was made with the clear mala fide intent to tarnish the reputation of our client to try and gain an unfair advantage in the upcoming elections," the notice added. It also called for an "unconditional public apology...through print and electronic media."
Chandrasekhar warns of further legal repercussions
The BJP leader warned that failure to meet these demands could lead to further legal repercussions for the Congress member. The notice warned the three-time Thiruvananthapuram MP that failing to comply with the specified conditions within 24 hours of receipt would result in the initiation of relevant criminal and civil proceedings in a competent court of law.
Notice highlights malicious intent and community disrespect
According to the legal notice, Tharoor's statements were made with malicious intent toward Chandrasekhar. The notice emphasizes that these defamatory remarks have not only harmed Chandrasekhar but also disrespected the entire Christian community of Thiruvananthapuram. The notice further states that Tharoor's statements are now being disseminated by his agents, supporters, and party members through various platforms, including social media and messaging apps, to spread false allegations against Chandrasekhar.
