BJP slams Mamata over 'not only Bengal will burn' remark
Several Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders have slammed West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for allegedly threatening protesting doctors and other states during a rally on Wednesday. They expressed their disapproval on social media platforms and demanded an apology from Banerjee. In a comment aimed at PM Narendra Modi, Banerjee accused his party of fostering violence in Bengal. "If you burn Bengal...Assam, North-East, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Delhi too shall burn! We will topple your chair," she declared.
Assam CM accuses Banerjee of inciting unrest
Following the contentious remark, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma accused Banerjee of attempting to ignite unrest across India with her "politics of failure." He expressed his outrage on social media, stating, "Didi, how dare you threaten Assam? Don't show us bloodshot eyes. Don't try to set India on fire with your politics of failure. It does not suit you to speak in such divisive language."
Manipur CM demands public apology from Banerjee
Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh also criticized Banerjee and demanded a public apology from her to the Northeast and the rest of the nation. "How dare Didi threaten the Northeast? I condemn such irresponsible remarks in the strongest terms," Singh said on social media. He urged Banerjee to stop inciting violence and hatred with divisive politics, deeming it highly unbecoming of a political leader to issue threats of violence on a public platform.
Odisha CM criticizes Banerjee's remarks about his state
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi joined his BJP counterparts in criticizing Banerjee for her controversial comments. "For making such objectionable remarks about Odisha, Mamata Banerjee, who gave you this right?" he questioned on social media. He emphasized that the people of Odisha are responsible and aware, and will never accept her negative comments or insensitive attitude toward their state.
Banerjee's remarks followed violence in Bengal
Banerjee's contentious statement was made after the BJP called for a 12-hour shutdown in Bengal to protest police actions against demonstrators during a march to the state secretariat. The protesters were demanding the resignation of Banerjee over the rape and murder of the 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar hospital. During the BJP protest, several incidents of violence and widespread disruption of services were reported across West Bengal.
