#Elections2019: BJP candidate Gautam Gambhir to contest from East Delhi
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday released a list of two candidates for Delhi for the Lok Sabha elections. Former cricketer Gautam Gambhir is going to be contesting from the East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency, according to the BJP's list. Meanwhile, Meenakshi Lekhi would be contesting from the New Delhi parliamentary constituency in the elections. Here's more.
BJP earlier announced names of four candidates for Delhi
Earlier on Sunday, BJP had released a list of four candidates for Delhi. Sitting MPs have been retained by the party with Harsh Vardhan contesting from Chandni Chowk, Manoj Tiwari from North East Delhi, Ramesh Bidhuri from South Delhi, and Pravesh Verma from West Delhi.
Gambhir joined the BJP in March
Gambhir joined BJP on 22 March. At the time, he said he was impressed by PM Narendra Modi's vision. "I am impressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision... I have contributed to the field of cricket and now hope to do more for the country," he had said. Inducting Gambhir into BJP, Arun Jaitley said the party would benefit from the former cricketer's talent.
Gambhir has replaced BJP's Maheish Girri from East Delhi
BJP has announced candidates for six of Delhi's seven Lok Sabha seats so far. It replaced Maheish Girri with Gautam Gambhir as the BJP candidate from East Delhi. Gambhir will fight against Arvinder Singh Lovely of the Congress and Atishi of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) from the constituency. Meanwhile, Lekhi will take on Ajay Maken of the Congress and AAP's Brajesh Goel.
Lok Sabha elections in Delhi on May 12
The Lok Sabha elections in Delhi will be held on May 12 for all of the seven parliamentary seats under the Phase 6 of the General Elections. The counting of votes will be held on May 23 and results will be declared the same day.
