BJP MP calls for a 'purush-aayog', because men suffer too!
Harinarayan Rajbhar, a BJP MP from Ghosi, UP, has said there should be a commission for men, like the National Commission for Women, as he believes men suffer too. In an interview with ANI, Rajbhar said men should also get a platform. Notably, he isn't the only one who thinks so. He has the company of Anshul Verma, Hardoi's MP, who thinks this would promote equality.
In Parliament, Rajbhar's demand was greeted with laughs
The 68-year-old MP brought the matter of 'purush aayog' in the Parliament last month, but the suggestion was met with laughs. However, he won't give up. Speaking to the news agency, Rajbhar said, "In the present time, we see incidents where men suffer at the hands of their wives. There should be no injustice with anyone." He claimed the problems of men go unheard.
Not implying all women or men are wrong, says Rajbhar
"I am not saying every woman is wrong or every man is wrong. There are people belonging to both the genders that inflict atrocities on the others. So, there should be a 'front' to deal with the issues of the menfolk," PTI quoted Rajbhar saying.
Men should also get a platform, feels Rajbhar
We are talking about equality, says another BJP lawmaker
Meanwhile, Verma raised the issue before a parliamentary standing committee, on Saturday. He called for the amendment of Section 498A, which safeguards women from domestic cruelty, but has been grossly misused. He said over 27 lakh men were wrongfully convicted between 1998 and 2015. "We are talking about equality here. Men should get legal protection in such cases," he added.
Notably, NCW doesn't feel a commission for men is needed
The NCW, however, feels there isn't any need for a commission for men. Chairperson Rekha Sharma said the body was created to ensure harassed women got justice. "But, if some people are demanding a commission for men, they have the right to do so," she said. However, last year, WCD minister Maneka Gandhi had said many men complained to her about false dowry cases.
