'Even Lord Ram can't stop rapes': BJP MLA triggers controversy
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker from Uttar Pradesh Surendra Singh triggered a controversy when he said 'even Lord Ram can't stop rapes in the state'. Further, the MLA asserted polluted minds are responsible for rapes and not even stricter laws will do much about it. Singh was asked about rising crimes against women under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Here's more about this controversy.
"Even if Lord Ram comes to earth, rapes will continue"
"I can say it for sure that such incidents of rapes cannot be checked even if Lord Ram comes on earth. These incidents are the natural culmination of polluted minds," Surendra Singh said.
Singh says good character and moral values may stop rapes
Doling out ways in which rising rapes can be curbed, Singh said inculcating moral values may help. "One must develop good character and moral values among men, women, and children to stop the occurrence of such incidents," he reportedly said. He went on to say even stricter laws or punishments wouldn't be effective in stopping rapes.
Rapists should be killed in encounters, suggests Singh
Surendra Singh didn't stop at that. He went on to say rapists shouldn't be imprisoned but killed in encounters. "Criminals are being killed in encounters by the police but those committing rapes are just sent behind bars. They should also meet the same fate," he said. Notably, the UP government had faced ire over a sharp rise in extra-judicial killings under Adityanath.
Singh has a penchant for making controversial statements
Earlier, Singh's statement on the Unnao rape case invited widespread criticism. According to Singh, it was 'impossible for a mother of three to get raped'. Before that, Singh had likened West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee to demon-king Ravana's sister Surpanakha, and compared bureaucrats with prostitutes. Till when will we have to cope with Singh's insensible comments can't be ascertained!
