Gorakhpur- BJP MLA on Dharna against own government
A BJP MLA from Gorakhpur, Dr Radha Ram Mohan Aggarwal sat on a dharna against own government, in protest against the liquor shops springing up in the vicinity of hospitals and schools. He said this was against government regulations and that no action was being taken. He accused the Yogi Adityanath government and police officers of turning a blind eye to the situation.
Adityanath says would ban liquor soon
Yogi Adityanath said the state would soon have new excise policy banning sale of alcohol along highways, near educational institutes, near religious places and hospitals. However, the new excise policy has not yet come into effect.
What was the issue about?
Dr Aggarwal was leading a protest, with mainly women and children against liquor shops near schools and hospitals. The protesters began pelting stones, following which a lathi charge was ordered. Aggarwal hauled up the IPS officer Charu Nigam responsible for the decision and reduced her to tears with his words. Several IPS officers in the country have since demanded action against Aggarwal.
Cong says Aggarwal trying to evade action
The Congress Aggarwal's dharna is an attempt to divert attention from the matter and avoid any action that may be taken against him. The party said, "if he is serious about illegal liquor shops why doesn't he hold dharna in Lucknow outside Vidhan Bhawan?"
