Gujarat elections: Protests and resignations after BJP releases candidates' list
All is not well for the BJP in Gujarat. The release of its first list of candidates with 70 names has triggered protests, with senior leaders expressing their dissatisfaction. Hundreds of supporters of BJP state vice-president IK Jadeja marched to the Gujarat party headquarters after the leader's name went missing from the candidates' list. Meanwhile, a sitting legislator sent in his resignation.

Jadeja, a strong supporter of former CM Anandiben Patel, wanted a ticket from Wadhwan seat in Surendranagar. But instead of him, the BJP named a member of the Patidar community as the candidate. His supporters, particularly from the Rajput community, have now demanded a ticket for him from Dhrangadhra seat; he has won all polls there except 1990.
This sitting MLA, "unhappy" with BJP's decision, quit
Meanwhile, Kodinar MLA Jetha Solanki resigned "as the party has stopped listening to (his) representations". He alleged Dalits were facing atrocities under BJP rule. However, BJP hasn't even declared a candidate for the seat. BJP's first list had 19 new faces. The rest, many of whom lost in 2012, are repeating candidates. As many as 11 sitting MLAs have been dropped.
What does the BJP's first list indicate?
BJP might have taken a cautious approach as of those candidates who are being repeated, many are contesting for their sixth term. Considering the challenge BJP faces from Hardik Patel encroaching upon their Patel votes, BJP has fielded 16 Patidar candidates.
