'Next week, we'll introduce Bill to execute rapists': Mamata
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced plans to introduce a bill in the state assembly next week, seeking capital punishment for those convicted of rape. This decision comes in the wake of widespread protests following the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata. The proposed legislation will be sent to Governor CV Ananda Bose for approval, she said.
Banerjee's vow to pressure governor for bill approval
According to her, the bill will be passed within 10 days after it is tabled, and if the governor doesn't pass it, her party, the Trinamool Congress, will sit outside Raj Bhavan. "This bill must be passed, and he cannot evade accountability this time," she said at an event, marking the foundation day of Trinamool Congress's students' wing. She also questioned the progress of the Central Bureau of Investigation into this case, asking "Where is justice?"
Banerjee criticizes BJP's response to Kolkata rape case
The Bengal CM stated that she met the victim's parents two days after she was discovered dead on duty in the seminar hall of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. "I asked for five days' time, but the case was sent to the CBI. They don't want justice. They want delay. It has been 16 days, where is justice?" she asked. She also condemned the Bharatiya Janata Party's march to state secretariat Nabanna, which resulted in chaotic scenes.
BJP enforces statewide shutdown in West Bengal
Kolkata Police employed teargas shells, water cannons, and batons to disperse demonstrators, resulting in the detention of more than 200 individuals on Tuesday. In response to the police's actions, the BJP called for a 12-hour bandh on Wednesday. "BJP has called a bandh because they want dead bodies. We want justice and death by hanging for the accused. They (BJP) have moved away from the goal of demanding justice for the victim," she said.
Banerjee dedicates foundation day to rape victim
Banerjee dedicated the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad Foundation Day to the young trainee doctor who was brutally raped and murdered. "It is the task of student society to give the dream of a new day by keeping the society and culture awake and to inspire everyone around with the bright vows of a new day. My appeal to all of them today, be encouraged in this effort, and stay committed... to a bright future," she said.
