Atishi to take oath today, to be Delhi's youngest CM
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi is set to be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Delhi at 4:30pm on Saturday. The ceremony will take place at Raj Bhavan, the Lieutenant Governor's residence. Alongside Atishi, five AAP Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs)—Mukesh Ahlawat, Gopal Rai, Kailash Gehlot, Saurabh Bhardwaj and Imran Hussain—will also be sworn in as ministers.
Atishi succeeds Kejriwal amid legal turmoil
Atishi will succeed Arvind Kejriwal, who resigned as CM on Friday after being granted bail by the Supreme Court in a corruption case. The President of India has officially appointed Atishi as the new CM from the date of her swearing-in and has also accepted Kejriwal's resignation. This appointment marks a significant milestone as Atishi becomes not only the third woman to hold this position but also Delhi's youngest ever Chief Minister.
Atishi's political journey
Atishi has a notable political background, having served as an advisor to Manish Sisodia during his tenure as Education Minister. She later took on the role of Education Minister herself, making significant contributions to improving government-run schools in Delhi. However, her first tenure as CM will be brief due to upcoming assembly elections in February next year. During this period, she will need to expedite various pending policies and welfare schemes.
Kejriwal's legal troubles and public response
Kejriwal's resignation comes after a series of legal troubles, including arrests by the Enforcement Directorate in March and the Central Bureau of Investigation in June on money laundering and corruption charges linked to a liquor policy scam. Upon his release from jail after six months, Kejriwal stated: "I got justice from the legal courts...now I will get justice from the people's court."
