Ashok Gajapathi Raju is a senior leader of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and a former Member of the Parliament and the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly as well. Raju belongs to the royal Pusapati family of the erstwhile princely state of Vizianagaram and is the Hereditary Trustee of the Vizianagaram Samsthanam Temples. He entered politics with Janata Party in the late 1970s, getting elected to the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly from Vizianagaram (Assembly) constituency. He switched to the TDP upon its formation in 1982 and won consecutively in the 1983, 1985, 1989, 1994, and 1999 elections on the party ticket from Vizianagaram. In 2004, Raju lost the seat of Vizianagaram to Veerabhadra Swamy Kolagatla in the 2004 Assembly polls. He returned to his former constituency as an MLA in the 2009 elections, and in 2014, was elected to the 16th Lok Sabha from Vizianagaram (Lok Sabha) constituency. Between 2014 and 2018, Raju served as the Union Minister for Civil Aviation in the Narendra Modi Government until TDP broke away from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
