Trinamool Congress boycotts three TV channels amid doctor rape-murder row
The ruling Trinamool Congress, currently under scrutiny for the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has announced its decision to boycott three television channels. The party accused ABP Ananda, Republic, and TV9 of promoting "anti-Bengal" propaganda. The TMC said it understands these channels' need to appease the "Zamindars of Delhi," referencing ongoing investigations and enforcement cases against their promoters and companies.
Trinamool Congress warns public against unauthorized representatives
In a statement, the TMC clarified that people appearing on these channels as party supporters or sympathizers during debates do not represent the party's official stance. The party urged the public not to be misled by these individuals, stating they are not authorized by the party. The statement emphasized that "the people of Bengal have consistently rejected this unholy Bangla Birodhi Nexus and have always chosen truth over propaganda."
Heated TV debate sparks Trinamool Congress boycott
The boycott decision follows a heated exchange between senior Trinamool leader and MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar and Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Agnimitra Paul on ABP Ananda. Dastidar, the deputy leader of Trinamool in Lok Sabha, referred to Paul, a renowned fashion designer, as a "saree maker." In response, Paul expressed immense pride in her profession and accused the Mamata Banerjee government of sheltering criminals and ignoring women's issues.
Trinamool MP apologizes for controversial remarks
During the same TV debate, Dastidar made another controversial statement, claiming that medical students were "made to sit on laps" for pass marks during the CPM era in Bengal. This comment drew strong criticism from women doctors, leading Dastidar to issue a public apology. She expressed regret for any hurt caused by her words and retracted her statement, reaffirming her commitment to championing the well-being and rights of women.
Tensions rise in TV debates over rape-murder case
TV debates on Bengali channels have become increasingly contentious as Trinamool and BJP leaders clash over the handling of a rape-murder case that has shocked the nation. The BJP has accused the ruling party of protecting criminals, while the TMC has alleged that opposition parties, including the BJP and CPM, are attempting to create unrest in the state.
