Born on July 22, 1959, Hegannahalli Narayana Shastry Ananth Kumar, was a senior BJP politician, and a Union Cabinet Minister in the first term of Narendra Modi government until his death. He was a six-time MP from the Bengaluru South Lok Sabha constituency and first became a member of Lok Sabha in 1996. His mother was associated with Bharatiya Jana Sangh and served as the Deputy Mayor of Hubli Dharwad Municipal Corporation between 1985 and 1986. A lawyer by profession, Kumar joined Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in 1973. During the 1984 emergency, Kumar was imprisoned for 40 days in Hubli jail. He joined BJP in 1987 and was associated with BJP outfit Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM). A stalwart politician, Kumar was inducted as a minister during the second Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, and during the National Democratic Alliance government in 1999. In 2003 he was made the State President for Karnataka BJP and was instrumental in BJP’s victory in the 2004 Karnataka assembly elections. In 2004, he was inducted as the National General Secretary of the BJP. Kumar passed away on November 12, 2018, due to pancreatic cancer.
