'You can ask...don't argue': Shah to reporter on Manipur question
Union Home Minister Amit Shah declined to comment on the possibility of resignation of Chief Minister Biren Singh in light of the Manipur violence during a press conference on Tuesday. When a reporter asked why the CM of the violence-hit state remained in office, Shah responded, "You can ask questions but don't argue." The press conference was held to highlight the achievements of the Narendra Modi 3.0 government's first 100 days when the question about Singh was raised.
Why does this story matter?
Manipur has been engulfed in violence since May last year. Initially sparked by ethnic tensions between the majority Meiteis and tribal Kukis, the conflict has deepened into severe divisions within Manipuri society. The unrest has resulted in at least 230 deaths, displaced around 50,000 people, and led to armed militias patrolling the streets. Since September 1, the conflict in the state has intensified, with militants adopting new technologies like drones and rockets alongside ongoing use of rifles and grenades.
Engaging with Meiteis, Kukis for peace: Shah
He added that the Centre was engaging with both the Meiteis and the Kukis to achieve lasting peace in the state. When asked if Prime Minister Modi would visit the violence-affected state on his 74th birthday, a point frequently raised by the opposition, the senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader said that if such a decision were made, "you would know."
Shah credits government for 'political stability'
Separately, Shah credited the Modi government for bringing "political stability" to India, stating that this is the "first time in 60 years" such an atmosphere has been achieved. He talked about the continuity of policies under their administration and praised their direction, speed, and accuracy. The home minister also mentioned plans to implement One Nation One Election within their tenure.
Financial assistance to farmers under PM Kisan Samman Yojana
In the agricultural sector, Shah highlighted that ₹20,000 crore were distributed to 9.5 crore farmers in the 17th installment of PM Kisan Samman Yojana. He reported that a total of ₹3 lakh crore has been distributed to over 12 crore farmers so far. The press conference was also attended by Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur and Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai.
