Ajit Jogi was a former Indian politician, the first Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, and a former IAS officer, who was a prominent figure in Chhattisgarh politics. During his tenure as an IAS officer, he was the district collector of Sidhi, Shahdil, Raipur, and Indore. In 1986, after quitting the civil services, he entered politics and joined the Indian National Congress, under the mentorship of Arjun Singh, a prominent Congress politician of Madhya Pradesh and the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Between 1986 and 1987, he became a member of the All India Congress Committee on Welfare of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe. He became a member of the Rajya Sabha in 1986 and again in 1992. He also held key positions in the party across Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, and Sikkim. In 1998, he entered Lok Sabha from the Rajgarh constituency. After Chhattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh in 2000, he was chosen as the first Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh. In 2008, he became a member of the Chhattisgarh Legislative assembly from the Marwahi constituency. In 2014, he won the Mahasamund Lok Sabha seat but met with a car accident during the election campaign, which left him paralyzed from the waist down. In 2016, he parted ways with Congress after the party expelled him for anti-party activities. The same year he launched his own party, Janta Congress Chhattisgarh, along with his wife Dr. Renu Jogi, who is an MLA from Chhattisgarh’s Kota constituency, and his son Amit Jogi, a former MLA. He passed away on May 29, 2020, at the age of 74, after suffering a heart attack.
