All you need to know about the NCT of Delhi
For the uninitiated, Delhi was given the special status in the 69th Constitutional amendment, under Article 239AA. This created a division of power among the Legislative Assembly and the State's council of ministers. Consequently, Delhi was renamed National Capital Region of Delhi. Under the Article, the Central government controls the Public Order, Police & Land and the state ministers are responsible for other issues.
Tussle between AAP and Centre way back in 2015
The tussle between AAP and Centre started way back in 2015, when Kejriwal demanded the then L-G, Najeeb Jung, pass the Public order, Police & Land files through him. The tussle refreshed in 2018 with L-G Anil Baijal, and AAP filed several petitions. The Supreme Court gave a divided decision, asking L-G and Kejriwal to work together. Amid this, state bureaucracy got paralyzed.
Why AAP's demand for Delhi statehood is not misplaced
There is a reason why AAP's demand for full statehood for Delhi isn't misplaced. As a full state, the Assembly elections will make more sense, holding the CM accountable and putting a full-stop on the blame game. Moreover, there will be better control over the law and order in the state. Delhi will suffer less loss of capital and will have better tax utilization.
