AAP alleges 'organs damage, slow death' plot against Kejriwal
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) alleged on Saturday that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is being subjected to a "slow death" in Tihar prison. Party spokesperson Saurabh Bharadwaj stated that Kejriwal, who has Type-2 diabetes, had requested insulin and a video conferencing with his family doctor, but the jail administration has denied his request. "I want to say with full responsibility that a conspiracy is underway for the slow death of Kejriwal," Bharadwaj claimed.
Why does this story matter?
The allegations were made a day after a Delhi court reserved its judgment on the AAP's plea demanding insulin for Kejriwal and a video conference with his family doctor. According to the AAP, Kejriwal's health has been deteriorating since his arrest last month in a money laundering case linked to the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy. On April 3, the party said that Kejriwal had lost around 4.5kg. He has also been experiencing fluctuations in his blood sugar levels, it added.
ED claims Kejriwal intentionally elevating blood sugar
Earlier this week, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) claimed that Kejriwal had been intentionally consuming foods such as mangoes and aloo-poori to elevate his blood sugar levels. The ED alleges this was done to provide grounds for medical bail. However, Kejriwal's lawyer, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, refuted these claims on Friday, stating that only three out of 48 meals sent from home contained mangoes and that Kejriwal uses sugar-free sweeteners in his tea.
How petty, political and ridiculous: Singhvi
"How petty, political and ridiculous ED can be? Their statements are completely false and malicious," Singhvi told the court. "Just because you have a lot of influence in the media you are able to publish that I am having aloo poori even though this meal was sent only once during puja." "Am I going to risk paralysis to get bail? he added.
Court will pronounce its orders on Monday
The court will pronounce its order on the plea moved by Kejriwal seeking insulin on Monday. He is currently under judicial remand until April 23. The Delhi CM was arrested last month by the ED. The agency has accused Kejriwal of being directly involved in the formulation of the liquor policy as well as the handling of the proceeds of the crime.
